Moxibustion
Moxibustion and acupuncture are classed in the same branches of Chinese medicine and have always been used together historically in clinical practice. The Chinese characters for acupuncture “Zhen Jiu” 針灸 are Zhen: needle, to needle; and Jiu: moxibustion. Zhen Jiu therapy complements each other and Chapter 73 of Lingshu states: “A disease that may not be treated by acupuncture may be treated by moxibustion”.
Moxibustion is a type of heat therapy using moxa wool in various forms. The main ingredient of moxa wool is Ai Ye 艾葉(Artemisia argyi) and combined with other herbs and when burned over or on skin, the heat produced penetrates into the muscles, tendons and bones to activate qi and blood circulation, and warms peripheral channels and collaterals (Chen & Chen, Chinese Medical Herbology and Pharmacology 2004). The heat should feel pleasantly warm with no scarring of the skin.
At Xin Sheng, only indirect moxibustion is used in the form of small moxa cones placed safely on the ends of the needles, or in the form of moxa sticks held by the practitioner at a safe distance without burning the skin. This therapy may be used during acupuncture treatment as deemed necessary by the practitioner at no extra cost.
Moxibustion for Breech Presentation
Moxibustion is a very safe and uninvasive way of attempting to turn babies. The optimum time to start moxa treatment is between 34-36 weeks when the baby still has room to turn but successful cases have been seen even as late as 38 or 39 weeks. Only one treatment is necessary and the patient will be given moxa sticks and instructions to complete the course at home.
